Mia is a beautiful, smart, loving and creative 5th grader who attends Carmichael Elementary School. Mia has so many great qualities and assets that I could go on forever, but unfortunately I am writing to you because Mia also has a big challenge in her life. Mia suffers from a rare bone disorder called Multiple Hereditary Exostosis. Multiple Hereditary Exostosis causes non-malignant bone tumors to grow throughout the body. Mia’s condition causes Mia to suffer from stiffness, daily aches, pains and fatigue. In addition to what Mia has to feel every day the disease has also caused her body to develop deformities in her hips, knees and arms. Last summer and fall Mia underwent two surgeries because the growth of her ulna in her left arm had been stunted by a large exostosis (bone tumor). Mia was required to have an exterior fixator for several months in order to correct the deficient bone length, after many trips to Tucson for physical therapy Mia was able to start using her arm again. Mia was very determined throughout her recovery and even played softball this past season. This December Mia will have to go through another surgery on both of her legs to remove multiple tumors in effort to alleviate some of Mia's pain and give her more mobility. The financial stress of the previous surgeries has finally caught up with my family. I know many of you may be in a similar situation and times are very hard right now, but any and all donation would be greatly appreciated.
